WORD OF REFLECTION

WHAT IS A GROUNDATION?

A Groundation (also know as “Groundings”), is a ritual tradition popularised by the Rastafari Movement. Within the Consciousness of Rastafari, the sharing of Knowledge, Wisdom & Overstanding is a primary endeavour. Groundings, therefore are gatherings of people in communal spaces that are designed to inform and elevate the consciousness of the community and by implication inform the application of this knowledge with in the works of the community.

This presupposes the idea that intellectual endeavours should not be confined to the ivory towers of universities; but are in fact most effect when engaged at the grassroots. This overstanding was immortalised by Baba Walter Rodney, when his fellowship with the Rastafari movement in the 1960’s inspire him to write the text “Groundings With My Brothers”.

The example of Nana Amos Wilson makes in clear that he indeed shared; and in fact was was entirely driven by this same consciousness. Nana Amos Wilson was among the most erudite of scholars – at the same time, he was unequivocally a man of the grassroots. As such, we find this a fitting title for an event venerating him.
